Cheltenham Preview Night – 26th January 2018
Panel
Luke Tarr – Star Sports (LT)
Luke Harvey – TV presenter and Bloody nice bloke (LH)
Paul K – Racing Post (PK)
Bill E – City AM Racing (BE)
Mick Fitz – Ex Top Jockey and legend (MF)
Day 1
Supreme Novices Hurdle
MF – Getabird really impressed at Punchestown but it was a weak race, he thinks Kalashnikov has the form to beat Getabird (6/1)
PK – Getabird has issues going left handed, he says Kalashinikov has the best form but he would go for Sharjah at a price (16/1)
LH – Kalashnikov has the best form he likes Summerville Boy (11/1) who jumps well
LT – If Kalashinikov was trained by a bigger yard would be much smaller price
BE – Kalashinikov EW
The Arkle
PK – Footpad not fast enough for good ground. Petit Mouchoir (7/2) and Saint Calvados (5/1) will go forward
MF – A Petit Mouchoir fan, he beat Footpad 3 times over hurdles and will put it up to him
LH – Petit Mouchoir has the class but not sure re the jumping, go for Saint Calvados who will handle good ground
LT- goes 5/4 Footpad, fancies Saint Calvados
Champion Hurdle
MF – Buveur D’Air (4/9!) and Faugheen (5/1) Forecast. Faugheen the only horse that can serve it up to BD
PK - Buveur D’Air will win. He likes Wicklow Brave Each way (14/1)
LH- This is a weak race Buveur D’Air will win. Faugheen has no chance. Suggests My Tent or Yours each way (10/1)
LT – Wicklow brave is overpriced and has each way value
I asked re Elgin (16/1) if it is supplemented. MF says travels well but may not find enough for this.

Other day 1
PK – Coo Star Sivola (14/1) will not be out of the frame in the Ultima (2.50)

MF – his only concern for Samcro is it hasn’t run at Cheltenham. Likes Black Op ew
LH – On the blind side has done nothing wrong (5/1). He then said Santini is his bet of the meeting and therefore like Black Op
LT – Black Op ew
BE – Next destination (9/2)
RSA
PK – Likes presenting percy (5/2), worried about tough race last time out. Black Corton jumps well and is tough, has a good chance
MF – likes black corton who handles any ground. Also concerns that Percy bottomed by that last race
LH – Black Corton
LT – Percy will win
BE – likes Black Corton
Champion Chase
MF – Altior wins (4/6). Great field for a place (10/1) if it gets on the front end
PK – Likes Altior but came up with a stat that horses off long break that are highly rated have won 52 times but then only once second time…a concern!
LH – Doesn’t care about the stat, Altior wins and has no flaws. Douvan has no chance.
BE – Special tiara (16/1) each way
Other day 2
Coral Cup – LT likes Le Breuil (20/1), PK likes Deal D’estruval (12/1) and Diese Des Bieffes (12/1)

The Bumper
LT – Didtheyleaveuoutto (6/1)
PK – mentioned Rhinestone (8/1) and Hollowgraphic (7/1)
MF – Mullins loves Hollowgraphic and really fancies it
Day 3
JLT
PK – has backed Benetar (9/1) but likes Finians Oscar (not even in the betting!)
LH – FO is no good. Benetar one of the bets of the meeting
MF – if Monalee runs it will win (12/1)
LT – not many in the betting will run so go for Benetar
Ryanair
LH – UDS needs soft. He thinks Top Notch will win.
MF – UDS, lots of the others will come out
PK – Stamina question for UDS, Cue Card is too old. He likes Balko Des Flos (7/1) each way, won in Galway, Irish Gold Cup second and will make the frame.
BE – Balko the best bet

PK – cannot have Apples if decent ground, likes Farclas on better ground (8/1)
LH – Apples is weak, likes we have a dream (7/1) but fancies stormy Ireland (7/1)
LT – We have a dream as he heard Henderson cannot split he and Apples
BE – Farclas
Albert Bartlett
PK – Santini (13/2) has the most potential. He said go for a horse that has run in lots of races and he likes Callett mad (33/1)
LH – Santini has impressed the most this year
LT – Santini
MF – Duc Des genievres (8/1) will be ridden to get home if it runs and Chef Des obeaux if soft
BE – Santini
The Gold Cup
MF – Native river is a solid bet
PK – Might bite is a nutter and would rather be on road to respect
LH – Might bite 3/1 is not a good price. Total Recall and Minella Rocco will be shorter on the day
BE – if soft native river and total recall (ruby rides total recall)
The Foxhunters
Richard Spencer said Sir Jack in good form and ready to go.

I see fox norton ruled out - proves these panellist shows are worth listening too (see my notes on Ryanair)

The Mullins interview on sportinglife about his horses is worth a read

Re: Cheltenham Preview Nights
Please can others who are at the previews stick their findings up here as well. Will be interesting to see how the different panels see it going this year as there are a lot of possible wide open big races this time. Maybe a cheeky summary could be put up the week before Cheltenham as well ;-)

Re: Cheltenham Preview Nights
I usually get invited to one in the Wine Lodge. Will post some bits and bobs from that. My pals go to one in Seven Kings that usually has a good panel. I won't set foot in a mick boozer though so I won't go. I'll press them for some info though.
